Plunket Unplugged
What is 'well child' - a health promotion approach that aims to give information to parents and caregivers. Plunket says only 14% of its calls are illness related. People are more likely to call with queries about feeding, sleeping and coping mechanisms. Calls tend to be longer than general Healthline calls. If an illness is detected, nurses use the same computer-based triage system as Healthline nurses. All Plunketline staff are registered nurses who have a postgraduate wellchild certificate

Keep parents in the know
WellChild/Tamariki Ora services are free for all children in NZ - there are three parts to the services health, education and promotion to provide parents with knowledge and skills to respond to a child's needs at different stages of development; health protection and clinical assessment to check that a child is developing normally through growth and development assessments, as well as informing parents about, or providing, immunisation; and whanau care and support, a link to community groups and services to support and identify the needs of parents. Well Child services may be provided by a midwife, local medical practice, practice nurse, Plunket nurse or WellChild provider. The WellChild Tamariki Ora Health Book is a resource that parents receive at the birth of their baby. It contains important information and advice about taking care of baby as he or she grows through the first five years of life; information on breastfeeding, safety, nutrition, health and development, as well as behaviour and discipline. The book also records a child's essential immunisation history, dental check-ups, doctor's appointments and the free checks a baby or child receives at birth, 1 week, 6 weeks, 3 months, 5 months, 9 months, 2 years, 3 years and 5 years.

Iron deficiency a concern
Infants have high iron needs because they are growing so fast. Between seven and 12 months, their daily requirement is higher than that of a grown man. Children who don't get enough iron may not learn as well. From about six months infants need iron from food they eat. Red meats are the best source; pureed cooked lamb or beef can be given at this stage

Family and whanau care and support
Well Child's aims is to provide educational, emotional, social and environmental support for families and whanau, in good times and in bad. Some extra support can be provided through additional home visiting and group health education sessions for these families and whanau. Evidence from NZ and overseas show that such supportive measures, when delivered by culturally sensitive health professionals or health workers, result in positive health gains for those children and families in need

Focus on children's well-being
WellChild is a Government funded programme provided throughout New Zealand by the Plunket Society and other WellChild providers. It provides 12 free checks for children, mainly at Plunket clinics. National WellChild Week co-ordinator Dr Marguerite Dalton said there are now four distinct areas focused on at different times of the year, rather than having a heavy concentration on one theme for one week only. The intention is to have people thinking about children's well-being right through the year, instead of just for a week. The focus for the current quarter is immunisation, but for the traditional WellChild Week there is a focus on the WellChild Book and checks provided by Plunket for children from birth to five-years old.
