Breastfeeding is best for both mothers and babies. The Ministry of Health recommends breastfeeding until babies are ready for and need extra food at around 6 months,
and continue breastfeeding once complementary foods have been introduced until at least one year of age and beyond. Many mothers need help when they begin breastfeeding, especially with a first baby.
For babies who are not breastfed or do not receive breast milk, an infant formula is the only appropriate breast-milk substitute in the first year of life
