Undertake a systematic and thorough clinical examination including:
- Observe and assess your child’s overall health and wellbeing
- Measure their weight, length and head circumference
- Examination of their hips
- Cardiovascular system (the heart and blood system)
Review your child’s breastfeeding and infant feeding status
Discuss safe sleeping practices for baby
Maternal wellbeing
Discuss with the mother their own physical and emotional health and wellbeing, what support they have, and offer information as appropriate about relevant agencies and services

Discuss mother's and parent-child interaction and bonding, mental health and parenting:
- Mother's mental health
- Infant and preschool mental health and attachment
- Alcohol and other drugs
- Strengthening family relationships
- Parenting skills and support (see Parenting for child age and stage in the health education section for resources)
- Supporting families to access income and housing if needed
